After tinkering with the MakerBot and it's programs, with a big help from Clint from his awesome job at actually making the machine work, we were finally able to print a MakerBot bug. Unfortunately the Bot went a little mental when it came to the bug's legs, so I had to make that in plaster clay. Unfortunately I've learned that the type of clay is damaging to an oven and therefore I am unable to bake it. So it seems that any and all bugs that I make from here on out will have to be made in pieces using Blender, and then printed individually using Bot and just superglue them together. I really like how the first one turned out though, so now I can start on my final, a bug room. However, to do that, this semester I will have to start playing with the Arduino, should be fun.

I think given the circumstances surrounding the Makerbot not being quite ready in time - this is a good start. It would be great to see you expand this project and finish it up with Makerbot legs. I would also like to see the detail you sketched out in Blender in regards to the bug's wings.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see more context regarding the piece as well. Aside from your fascination with bugs, what makes this 3D print unique? What is your concept behind creating this piece?
Your bug turned out really well for a first attempt at a glitchy MakerBot. I think now that the MakerBot is working better, you'll be better able to expand on your initial concept and really flush out the idea to be perfect for the final. Adding wings, lights and more bugs will show your passion for bugs and mastering the program will make them especially unique to you!
ReplyDeleteI love how good your bug turned out. I am not a bug lover at all , but your project definitely intised me to want to look into them a bit more. I think your final project will be great and I am glad you chose to do something so different and exciting, it made for a fun project to look at and i am anticipating your final!
ReplyDeleteGiven that the MakerBot was not in working condition for a majority of the first half of the semester, I feel you have done a great job. I know you were only ably to make one bug by the time of our critique, but having seen some of the other things you are creating in Blender, I am excited to see what else you will create by the end of the semester, as well as how you incorporate the Kinect and/or the Arduino. Great job so far Max.
